Ako informoval Roman Slobodník z organizácie Ochrana dravcov na Slovensku, v polovici septembra zaznamenali v spomínaných krajinách celkovo 6 915 sokolov migrujúcich smerom do subsaharskej Afriky. Najviac jedincov, až 53 bolo na Slovensku pozorovaných začiatkom septembra. „So sčítaním kriticky ohrozeného sokola červenonohého sme na Slovensku začali v roku 2014, keď sme sa pridali k maďarským partnerom, ktorí takto lokalizujú nocoviská a následne sa snažia tie najvýznamnejšie zachovať a ochrániť pred prípadným ohrozením," povedal Slobodník.
Sokol červenonohý sa pred migráciou na juh združuje na dravca netypicky do kŕdľov a v týchto zoskupeniach prelietava územím viacerých krajín. „V kŕdľoch sa dobre počíta," konštatoval Slobodník s tým, že takýmto sčítaním sa zistí nielen počet sokolov, ale predovšetkým lokality, v ktorých sa vyskytuje. Ochranárske opatrenia na jeho záchranu sa budú potom cielene uskutočňovať v ním preferovaných územiach. Všetky sokoly červenonohé sú už podľa Slobodníka na ceste do Namíbie alebo Botswany. Počas jesennej a jarnej migrácie nalietajú spolu niekedy aj viac ako 33-tisíc kilometrov.
Záchrane najväčšieho „fešáka medzi dravcami“ napomáha projekt LIFE podporený Európskou komisiou, ktorý uskutočňuje organizácia Ochrana dravcov na Slovensku v spolupráci s maďarskými partnermi, Štátnou ochranou prírody SR a s podporou Ministerstva životného prostredia od roku 2012. Projekt potrvá do roku 2017. Práve Maďarsko je podľa Slobodníka výborným príkladom ochrany tohto druhu, pretože v priebehu necelých desiatich rokov sa tu podarilo zdvojnásobiť populáciu zo 600 na viac ako 1300 párov. Na Slovensku bol tento rok sokol červenonohý pozorovaný na všetkých známych lokalitách západného Slovenska, čo je prísľub pre opätovné zahniezdenie tohto druhu. "Počas zimy budeme pokračovať v aktivitách na jeho záchranu," uzavrel Slobodník. Aktivisti budú pomáhať napríklad zlepšením umelých hniezdnych možností - inštaláciou búdok ako aj zlepšením prirodzených hniezdnych možností – výsadbou pôvodnej drevinovej vegetácie. Dôležitá jej aj ochrana straky, havrana a vrany ako prirodzených staviteľov hniezd, pretože sokoly si hniezda sami nestavajú.
